HMA’s pioneering project “Thinkal – Awareness creation and distribution of menstrual cups” is a project that is intended to spread awareness and encourage women to use menstrual cups to ensure better menstrual hygiene. HMA follows a model that includes not only the distribution of M-cups but also creating awareness through medical professionals and thus encouraging women to use menstrual cups. Through this model, medical professionals alter the perceptions of the beneficiaries and help to break the cultural taboo associated with menstrual hygiene. Our division has been taking up several projects for the awareness creation and distribution of M-Cups with the support of LSGB, NGOs, SHGs, organizations etc.
The basic three models of M- Cup projects are:
The idea of introducing M-Cups came from relief camps in Alappuzha municipality during the 2018 floods in Kerala. Water-logged areas, restricted women from access to safe menstrual hygiene products and the sanitary pads supplied by various agencies had clogged community toilets in relief camps, leading to enfeebling effects on health and environment.
Therefore, HLL Management Academy (HMA) came to tackle the issue by identifying it and tried to create awareness and distribute M-Cups in Alappuzha municipality. This project was implemented with the CSR support of Coal India Ltd, with the cooperation of LSGDs, local NGOs, health workers, medical practitioners and with the technical support of the Corporate R&D team of HLL.
In the FY 2022-23, M-Cups were included in the 14th Five-year plan of the Govt of Kerala. Along with that, the Government of Kerala has issued a circular regarding the purchase of M-cups for LSGBs from HLL without tender.
The project ‘Thinkal’ supported the creation of India’s first sanitary napkin-free villages – Kumbalangy & Kallikkad.
“The Thinkal Project has been nationally recognized for its impact, receiving the SKOCH Award in both 2024 and 2025, along with prestigious honours such as the Asianet Healthcare Award, FE Healthcare Award and CSR Times Award in 2025.
